UK mattress sizes

A UK mattress is sold by the bed size it fits. Check width, length and, for sheets, depth.

Which? also lists three European sizes sold in the UK: Euro single 90 × 200 cm, Euro double 140 × 200 cm and Euro king 160 × 200 cm. Check your frame before buying one.

Children’s mattresses

Mattress depth

There is no standard depth. Which? has tested mattresses from 11.5 cm to 69.5 cm deep, with most between about 20 and 30 cm. Depth matters for fitted sheets: Dunelm sells fitted sheets in depths from 25 to 38 cm and recommends one slightly deeper than your mattress. See fitted sheet sizes.

Before you order

• Measure the inside of the frame or the top of the divan, not the old mattress, which may have spread.
• MattressNextDay advises checking the staircase “bulkhead” (the lowest point of ceiling above the stairs), because a firm or natural mattress should not be folded to get it upstairs.
• Rolled mattresses avoid that problem, but still need space to unbox.
