UK sofa sizes, and will it fit?

There is no standard sofa size: a “3-seater” can be 180 or 230 cm wide. Measure the wall and the way in.

Living Room Online’s own warning: “3-seater” varies wildly between makers, so always check the width in centimetres, not the seat count.

How wide a sofa fits your wall?

Living Room Online suggests: maximum sofa width = wall length minus 30 cm, leaving about 15 cm either side. So a 240 cm wall takes a sofa up to about 210 cm. Soho Furnishing suggests at least 30 cm clearance around a sofa.

For depth, Living Room Online lists compact sofas at 75–85 cm, standard 85–95 cm and deep 95–110 cm, and warns recliners need 40–60 cm more when extended.

Will it fit through the door?

1. Find the sofa’s packaged width, height and depth (Habitat).
2. Measure the front door frame. If it is wider than the packaged height, the sofa should go through on its side (Habitat).
3. Measure the narrowest point of every hall, internal door and stair, and the landing. Look out for radiators and shelves.
4. For corners, it’s the diagonal that matters (UK Sofa Shop).
5. Measure the open doorway at its narrowest point, not the frame: the door itself takes up a few centimetres (UK Sofa Shop).

If space is tight, sofas that arrive in pieces, or with removable feet, are easier to get in. Sofa beds: IKEA’s use 140 × 200 cm mattresses (sofa bed sizes).
